Once you get comfortable at your local circuit, and your times begin to get faster, it's time to branch out to different race tracks to gain more experience.

When you attend a new circuit for the first time, there's a few things you need to identify from a safety perspective:

- What direction the race track goes?
- Where the in & out grid is situated on the race track?
- Start / Finish line

Once you have that under control, we then want to work out where the race line is, what kerbs we can potentially use, passing opportunities, how much run off is available and braking markers.

When searching for where the race line is, the first way to identify that is by looking for the dark rubber line around the race track. It would be wise to do a track walk before driving a lap to see where other drivers position their kart while driving.

On your track walk, looking at where the tyre marks are on kerbs can help identify which kerbs are being used more than others. The other thing drivers should look for when assessing the tyre marks on the kerbs is at what point they clip the apex. This should help newcomers to a race track know where the apex is.

Watch other karts if possible as sometimes you can notice experienced compared to newcomers driving around the track. Listen to when the faster drivers lift off or brake, then try take mental notes so when you drive you can try replicate what they are doing.

I would also recommend to build up in the first session. Don't go out onto the track flat out and bury it into the gravel at Turn 1. Doing this generally lowers your confidence and you start on the backfoot. Aim to finish your first session with your final lap being your fastest.
