The second edition of our SuperNats week is looking at the Barriers!
Everyone knows Monaco!
A tight circuit filled with barricades that is high risk, high reward and where track position is key!
Although a little different, the Las Vegas SuperNats is a new element for many drivers who haven’t experienced racing with barricades.
Make a mistake… you’re likely writing off your chassis.
For drivers who’ve never raced on a circuit with barriers, my advice….. build up your speed and confidence.
Even just the echoing driving inside the barricades can be daunting. The sound of your engine and other karts echoes on track.
And when drivers hit the barriers, the following lap can bite you if you’re not paying attention.
We’re going to see the leading drivers just millimetres away from touching the barricades. Whether that’s on entry, at the apex or exiting, you need to be right alongside to truly be fast.
If you find yourself in an incident, the following session should be treated with caution, but if you’re heading into qualifying you don’t have that luxury.
Once racing commences, be mindful that when you’re overtaking or being overtaken you need to give more space unlike a traditional circuit with runoff and grass.
The inside karts tend to squeeze the outside karts, so if you’re on the outside, you might have to lift off as running alongside the barrier and just touching will rip you into the barriers and bite hard.
When you’re defending also, if you’re lookin to squeeze a kart to the inside or outside, it’s more likely that the kart behind will be forced to lift as there’s less margin for error or contact so use that to your advantage.
My advice to drivers. Stay focused. Look ahead and take notice to any incidents so the next lap you’re aware of any changes to the track layout.
I’ve had a few instances where you’re on the absolute limit, and all the sudden you exit a corner and there’s an edge hanging out in your path.
Tomorrow we’ll be looking at the range of drivers attending from all around the world and how to handle racing against new drivers you’ve never seen and not being intimidated.
