The 2023 edition of the Junior Top Guns was once again held at the Oakleigh kart racing club in Victoria.
Kart Class fielded a few drivers in the junior race event with long time Cadet racer Riley Harrison leading the charge winning both rounds in Cadet 12 on both circuit layouts.
Harrison started day one on the back foot after winning the opening heat race but then falling victim to a starting infringement that moved him down the order to position 7. This didn’t stop the South Australian driver as the current Australian #3 powered his way past his competition to just fall short of the race win by 0.077 of a second.
With all points counting towards the final starting position, Harrison would start from the second row of the grid, but was able to squeeze into the lead by lap 7 and after a close battle, would go onto win the opening night.
The second day would be on the faster of the two Oakleigh layouts, with Harrison setting purples in qualifying and claiming the lap record in the process.
Heat one was a close battle with fellow South Australian driver and AKC team mate Dom Mercuri securing the win from Harrison, with heat 2 and the final going to Harrison to claim both nights and overall honours.
Brad Majman made a comeback to Australian Karting after his European racing season in 2022 in KA2. After a slow start to day one, Majman kicked into gear on day two where he set multiple fastest laps and claimed P2 on the second evening.
Majman will look to use his overseas experience to good effect when the AKC series rolls around in a months time.
The team also welcomed two new drivers on loan from other teams for the weekend with Ash Parker taking home a pair of thirds in the junior KA3 category and Oscar Hadden claiming the lap record in Cadet 9 on the second evening.
Overall it was a good start to the 2023 season for the Kart Class team as we look to build on 2022 that saw us finish 3rd in the Teams Championship and have multiple race winners at the AKC.
The next event will see us travel to South Australia for the AKC shakedown event in Monarto on February 11-12.
